Ferris Deck Size Guide: 48, 52, 60, or 72 Inches — Which One Fits Your Place
Picking the right Ferris deck size isn't about going biggest — it's about matching the mower to the property. Here's how to figure out what actually fits.

Most folks who walk in looking for a Ferris ask me one question first: "What size do I need?" And my honest answer is always the same — depends on your place, not your pride.
A bigger deck isn't automatically better. It mows faster on open ground, sure, but it's harder to maneuver around trees, slower through gates, and a pain on sloped ground. If you pick wrong, you either waste money on mower you can't use, or buy one that takes you twice as long to finish. Neither's great.
Here's how I walk customers through it.
48-inch
This is your gate-friendly deck. If you've got a standard 4-foot gate, a 48-inch deck usually clears it without a fight. Good for folks mowing a half-acre to an acre with some landscaping, flower beds, a pool — basically anywhere you need to squeeze between things. Ferris 500S 48" and 300S 48" both live in this lane. Strong machines, just built for tight work.
Where 48 comes up short: wide-open yards. If you're mowing 3 acres of pasture with a 48, you'll be out there all evening.
52-inch
Probably our most popular size. 52 is the sweet spot for a lot of Mississippi properties — enough deck to make real progress on 1 to 3 acres, still maneuverable enough for most gates and trees. The Ferris 500S 52", 300S 52", ISX800 52", IS600 Z 52", and SRS Z3 stand-on all come in this size. Lot of options depending on how much you want to spend and whether you want to sit or stand.
If I had to pick one deck size for an average South Mississippi property — house, shop, some pasture, a few trees — 52 is what I'd grab.
60-inch
Now we're talking real ground. 60-inch decks eat open acreage. If you've got 3 to 10 acres of pasture, a commercial property, or you're mowing for other people on the side, the extra 8 inches add up fast over the course of a day. ISX3300 60" and ISX800 60" both show up here. You're paying more, but if the land supports it, you'll finish in way less time.
The catch: a 60 won't clear most residential gates, and it's overkill for a small yard. If you're only doing an acre, you're trading maneuverability for speed you don't need.
72-inch
This is commercial territory. Lawn care businesses, municipal work, big farms. If you're asking whether you need a 72, you probably already know the answer — you're mowing 15 plus acres on a regular schedule and every minute counts. Ferris makes them, and we can order one in, but most of our customers don't land here.
How to actually decide
Forget the deck for a second. Answer three questions first:
- How wide is my narrowest gate? Measure it. Deck needs to be at least 2–3 inches narrower than the opening, because the tires stick out past the deck on every zero turn.
- How many acres am I actually cutting? Not total property — just the part you mow. A 5-acre lot with 4 acres of woods is a 1-acre mow.
- How often do I cut it? Once a week in season? Every 10 days? The more often, the more you benefit from speed.
Rule of thumb I use: under 1 acre, 48. One to 2 acres, 52. Two to 5 acres, 60. More than 5 acres on a regular schedule, talk to us about a 60 or 72 and a commercial setup.
Still not sure
Honestly, just come by. It's easier to figure out in person when you can tell me what the property looks like, where the gates are, and how your back's feeling about another hour on the mower. We've got most of these sizes sitting on the lot and you can see the difference. We're at 3069 Hwy 49 in Collins — give us a call at (601) 641-5475 if you want me to set time aside.
If you want to see the lineup first, our Ferris catalog has every model we carry with pricing, and this post breaks down the 500S vs ISX800 if you're deciding between those two.
