Golf Course Rough Mowing in Mississippi: Why Supers Are Running Ferris
Mississippi golf superintendents managing Bermuda rough and Pine Belt terrain are switching to Ferris zero turns. Here's what models fit, what the tech does, and what it costs.

Running rough on a Mississippi course in July is a different problem than mowing in cooler, flatter climates. You've got 419 Bermuda or TifTuf pushing fast between cuts, heat in the 90s by mid-morning, terrain that rolls and drops where the pines meet the fairways, and a season that runs March through November without a real break.
Equipment that holds up fine up north or on flat coastal layouts will grind down your operators and your shop budget here. The Ferris line keeps showing up on course equipment lists across Jones and Marion counties because it handles those hours, and the cut quality on Bermuda rough stays consistent enough that supers aren't constantly correcting for striping problems or windrow buildup.
Why Suspension Matters More Than You Think
Most rough-mowing conversations start with deck width and engine power. Both matter. But if your operators are putting in 8-hour days on a 200-plus-acre course, the fatigue question catches up before lunch.
The Ferris ISX 2200 runs ForeFront suspension — that's an independent front and rear system, not a spring-loaded seat trying to cover a rigid frame. The machine itself isolates impact from the ground. On rough terrain with grade changes or soft spots after rain, the deck follows the surface rather than bouncing off it. That means a more consistent cut height and operators who aren't wrecked by 2 PM when you still have back nine rough to clear.
For courses where budget matters more than the flagship and terrain is relatively tame, the IS 700Z Series runs Hydro-Gear ZT-3200 transaxles and Ferris independent suspension at a lower price point. The 60-inch deck at $9,199 covers serious ground per hour without giving up the suspension benefit.
Deck Width by Application
60-inch decks are standard for open rough corridors. For tight banks around greens, tee complexes, and native-area borders, 52-inch gives you better control.
Most courses running Ferris pair both — 60-inch for open rough, 52-inch for detail passes.
The ISX 2200 runs in both configurations:
- 52-inch with Kawasaki FX781V EVO, 27 hp: $12,699
- 60-inch with Vanguard 810cc EFI and Oil Guard, 31 hp: $13,749
The ISX 800 Series is a step below the 2200 but still handles 52 or 60-inch decks on Hydro-Gear ZT-3400 transaxles:
- 27 hp Briggs & Stratton Commercial Series, 52-inch: $10,149
- Kawasaki FT730V, 60-inch: $11,499
The iCD+ Cutting System on Bermuda Rough
The ISX 2200's iCD+ runs blades on separate drive belts — two belts for two blades, not a single belt driving both. On Bermuda rough that's been growing 3 or 4 days between cuts, a single-belt system bogs and clumps. The dual-belt setup maintains individual blade speed through thick growth. The cut is cleaner, and you avoid the trailing windrows that force extra cleanup passes.
Ferris vs. Toro Z Master — Honest Take
The Toro Z Master 8000 is the other machine you'll find on Mississippi courses. It's a solid mower. The Titan deck cuts well and the MyRIDE suspension is competitive for operator comfort.
Where Ferris pulls ahead for rough work: ForeFront is more aggressive about isolating terrain impact at the frame level, not just at the seat. On hilly terrain or after wet spells when the ground is uneven, the difference in deck consistency is real. Ferris also holds MAP pricing tighter — you're not getting different numbers from different dealers. And authorized Ferris service and parts through a local dealer means you're not waiting on a regional chain to run an order when something needs replacing.
