How Mississippi Farmers Use Zero Turn Mowers to Cut Labor Costs
Time is money on a working farm. If you're spending four or five hours a week mowing pastures, fence lines, and property edges with an old tractor or a residential rider, that's not a maintenance task anymore — it's a labor problem.
More farmers across Covington County and South Mississippi are switching to commercial zero turn mowers specifically to solve this. Not because they're cheap. Because they're fast, they hold up, and they dramatically cut the hours it takes to keep a property looking right.
Why a Zero Turn Changes the Math
A commercial zero turn covers ground about twice as fast as a standard tractor mowing setup. The zero-radius turning means you're not making three-point turns at the end of every row — you spin and go. Around fence posts, trees, and equipment, a good zero turn does in one pass what takes a tractor three.
On a 10-acre property with irregular terrain, that difference adds up fast. What takes four hours on an older machine can drop to under two on a commercial zero turn. Multiply that over a full mowing season and you're looking at a real reduction in either labor hours or personal time — depending on who's doing the mowing.
What to Look for in a Farm Zero Turn
Not all zero turns are built for farm conditions. Mississippi summers are brutal — heat, humidity, and dusty or overgrown fields will kill a residential-grade mower in a season or two.
For farm use, look for:
Engine size — You want at least 25 HP, ideally more. Thick fescue, Bermuda in heavy growth, or overgrown field edges require power. Underpowered mowers bog down and overheat.
Deck construction — A heavy-gauge fabricated deck holds up to the abuse of field mowing. Stamped decks found on residential and light-commercial units dent and crack faster on rough terrain.
Frame and spindles — Cast iron or heavy steel spindle housings are a must. Hitting a hidden rock or debris in a pasture is inevitable. Cheap spindles don't survive it.
Ground speed — Commercial mowers top out around 12–15 mph in field conditions. That speed difference over hours of mowing is significant.
The Ferris Models That Hold Up on Farms
At Dykes Motors Power Equipment, we're an authorized Ferris dealer and we see what farmers in this area are actually running. A few models consistently get mentioned:
The Ferris 500S is the entry point for serious farm use — 23.5 HP Briggs & Stratton engine, fabricated deck, built for all-day use. It's what a lot of smaller farm operations start with.
For larger properties — 15 acres or more — the ISX2200 and IS700Z are popular. The ISX2200 brings the full independent suspension system, which matters if your terrain is uneven. Running a machine hard on rough ground without suspension beats up the operator and the equipment. The IS700Z offers the same suspension in a more focused commercial package.
If you're hauling your mower between different parts of the property or to another farm, our utility trailers are a practical add-on — 5'×10' single axle, 3,000 lb capacity, ready to move.
Financing Makes the Math Work
A commercial Ferris mower is a capital expense, but it's one that pays back in labor savings. We work with top national lenders for competitive ag-equipment financing. Monthly payments on a $10,000–$14,000 mower often run well under $300, which most farms recover in reduced labor hours within the first season.
We've had farmers from Laurel, Brookhaven, and across Lincoln and Jones Counties come in specifically because they could finance here without going through a big-box equipment chain or waiting on a dealer hours away.
One More Thing Worth Mentioning
If you're hauling a mower to multiple properties or need a work truck to go with your equipment setup, our sister lot — Dykes Motors — carries used trucks and work vehicles at the same address on Hwy 49. Some customers take care of both in one stop.
We're at 3069 Hwy 49 in Collins. If you've got a property that needs a better mowing solution, come by and we'll walk you through what fits your acreage and terrain. Or call us at (601) 641-5475.
